Best Tour Guide Ever!

Liliana is the best tour guide we've ever had. Not only did she organize the tour just for us, she also researched a trip we were going on afterwards, to be sure she didn't double up on anything. She was thorough and interesting in her historical accounts and super friendly!

Amazing tour of Jewish Lisbon!!!

My husband and I took the Jewish walking tour with Paolo. By far, this was our most memorable time in Lisbon! The sites and history that we explored together were very interesting and Paolo is truly a scholar and historian. But the most amazing part of the trip was hearing about his own family history and his search for the Jewish identity in Portugal. He is an amazing story teller and we were transported to the past by his stories. He is writing a book, and it will be a "must-read" for me! Do not hesitate to book this trip! It fills up months in advance for a reason. There is no other tour like this. We did another private Jewish tour in Porto with another tour group, which paled by comparison.

“Best tour of our trip”

Paolo gave us a tour of Jewish Lisbon that was enlightening and entertaining. His English was perfect since he lived and studied in the United States. We learned so much history about the Iberian peninsula as well as its Jewish people. All of this historical information helped us understand what we were seeing during the rest of our tour through southern Portugal and Spain. Paolo told us about his family history which helped make this tour even more memorable. We also sampled some typical foods of the region during our time together. This was a highlight of our trip, and I'd highly recommend Paolo.

Highlight of our stay -- tour and tasting”

We had a very memorable afternoon and evening with Justin. We first took a walking tour of Lisbon -- a fascinating explanation of Lisbon's history and places of interest. Justin's knowledge, plus desire to share and answer our questions, made it an exceptional tour. We then moved on to the evening tasting experience and enjoyed an overview of Portuguese wines and food. They were accompanied by delicious assortment of typical Portuguese cheese, meats, olives, and delicious bread & olive oils. Again, a wonderful learning experience and a highlight of our visit to Lisbon.

“Our tour of the Alfama”

Paolo was our tour guide for the Alfama Tour, and we enjoyed it so much we booked again for the Hidden Lisbon Tour. Paolo is passionate about his city, and he has incredible historical and insider knowledge.  HIs tour was quite simply head and shoulders above other walking tours we have done in other cities.  We did not have as much much time to see Lisbon as we would have liked, but having done these tours I really feel like I have experienced the city, and fallen in love with it!  This was money well spent indeed, and I cannot recommend it more highly.

“Don’t visit Lisbon without Lisbon Explorer's guidance”

Having Paolo from Lisbon Explorer as our guide made our visit to Lisbon an unforgettable one. He explained the why's and if's in such a logical and striking way that we kept remembering his comments well after we left him. I believe seeing this historic city with just some dry information is a waste, and I suggest anyone who will come to visit Lisbon to take advantage of the wonderful guiding service Lisbon Explorer is offering. It's well worth what you will pay.

“Fantastic walking tour for a family of 5!”

We chose the Jewish Lisbon walking tour and had a wonderful experience. Our guide, Paolo, gave us insight into the overall history of Lisbon and Portugal with the added jewish aspects. He showed us the sights of Lisbon and the beautiful views but also told us the stories behind the places and monuments. We are a family with 3 boys, 8, 13 and 15, and he held their interest the whole time, particularly the teenagers. We have had many tour guides on our holiday but Paolo was in our number one group. Highly recommended.

“You can’t call this a tour, it is more like an adventure”

What a delightful welcome to Lisbon eight of us experienced on our first full day In Portugal, as we walked Rua Augusta toward Praca do Comercio and saw our guide Paolo waving cheerfully to us under the famous arch. He walked with us to the center of the square, and he recounted the history of Lisbon and Portugal, giving us just the right amount of information that we desired without overloading us. He next led us up the Rua Augusta, relating further details about Lisbon, especially about the effects of the terrible earthquake of 1755. We viewed the Elevador Da Santo Justa, the Baixa, and learned about the Roman ruins and the Praca Dom Pedro IV. Paolo did not neglect to mention (and show us in store windows along the walk) the delicious pastries, special hams and sausages, and sweets that we could sample that are central to Portuguese traditions.

We continued our tour with Paolo by taxis to Castilo de Sao Jorge, where we enjoyed a breathtaking panoramic view of Lisbon from its ramparts, made a quick tour of its museum, where Paolo pointed out the azulejos and discussed their origin and significance. We then wandered with him through the winding, narrow streets of the Alfama District, and we visited the historic St. Antonio church before walking to one of Paolo’s favorite restaurants—Faca and Garfo—on Rua da Condessa . Here we tried many of the traditional Portuguese items on the menu, including sardines, bacalhau, mackerel, salads, beer, wine, and even ginginga (without the little chocolate eatable cups).

At lunch, Paola helped us by recommending other sites to see in Lisbon, and he offered us many useful tips on traveling the city and Portugal. He had a keen awareness of our needs and interests. We definitely would request him again as a guide because he is so knowledgeable about Portuguese history, art, architecture, shopping, business and commerce, and culture. What a rewarding day we had in his company.

Paolo deserves a giant “Above and Beyond” award. He rose above our expectations, and he provided us with information that greatly surpassed that which we could learn from reading tour books.
